Modern Pitching Mechanics (Healthy and Powerful)

Writer's picture: Amanda WhiteAmanda White

Fastpitch softball has evolved significantly over the years, and the pitching mechanics taught and used back in the 90s and early 00s have changed as technology and research have improved. Modern pitching mechanics allow for pitchers to develop power through healthy biomechanical sequencing, with accuracy and speed being a by product. It's important for players to find a coach who understands and teaches these techniques, because their joints and muscles depend on it. In this blog, we'll discuss why it's essential to work with a coach who is up-to-date with modern pitching mechanics, and how you can find the right coach for your needs.

Pitching mechanics have been developed and refined to help players pitch faster, more accurately, and with less strain on their bodies. The basic technology of slow-motion video, along with biomechanical research, have taught us that improper sequencing leads to the overuse of smaller muscle groups and puts unnecessary pressure on joints that causes pain at young ages. That combined with a lack of muscle development and training to support joints, leads to avoidable injuries in young athletes. The techniques that promote using a combination of leg drive, hip rotation, internal arm rotation, and an active release to generate maximum power and speed, focus on a series of body movements that evenly disrupted force applied through the pitching mechanics. A coach who understands and teaches these mechanics can help players improve their pitching technique, reduce the risk of injury, and maximize their potential on the field.

Finding a coach who knows biomechanically healthy pitching mechanics can be challenging, but there are several ways to identify qualified coaches. One way is to look for coaches who have experience playing fastpitch softball at a high level. These coaches are likely to, but not always, have firsthand experience with healthy pitching mechanics and can share their expertise with their students. Your best option is to seek out coaches who have attended pitching clinics with highly skilled pitching instructors and coaches or who participate in certification programs that focus on healthy pitching mechanics. These coaches have specialized training in the latest techniques and can help players develop their skills through a targeted program. It is important to emphasize that your instructor should be able to explain healthy mechanics or sequencing and know what drills to promote and support healthy mechanics. Spending time vetting an instructor is worth your time in the long run.

Modern and healthy pitching mechanics are critical for success in this sport, just like any other sport. It's essential to find a coach who understands and teaches these techniques. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced player, working with a qualified coach can help improve a player’s pitching technique, reduce the risk of injury, and maximize potential in the circle. By seeking out coaches with experience or specialized training in healthy pitching mechanics, you can ensure that you're receiving the best possible instruction and support for your daughter.

As a Paisley Pitching Affiliate, I encourage my network of athletes to sign up for her pitching app to access a whole collection of videos and drills. If you are in the Greater Seattle area, I encourage you to attend either a Foundational Pitching or Power Pitching class with me at the Mariners Training Center - Seattle!
